Which rules should I know to avoid fines in Singapore?

Singapore · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Singapore imposes heavy fines for infractions that might be overlooked elsewhere, so it is important to keep a few basic rules in mind:

  • Do not eat or drink on MRT trains, buses, or inside stations.
  • The import of most chewing gum is prohibited, though there are approved exceptions for certain dental or medicinal varieties.
  • Do not litter or spit; smoke only in designated areas.
  • Cross the street only at marked crossings and in accordance with traffic signals.
  • E-cigarettes (vapes) are completely banned, including possession.

Note: Declare goods exceeding duty-free allowances (such as alcohol or tobacco) upon entry; carrying undeclared tobacco can result in heavy fines.
