Vietnam is generally safe for travellers; violent crime against tourists is rare. The usual problems are petty: bag snatching from passing motorbikes, overcharging at tourist spots, unmetered taxis, and people who start a service (shoe shine, cyclo ride) and then demand a high price. Agree prices first and keep your phone away from the road side.
