- Sa Pa – Cat Cat – Sin Chai: short and easy (a few km), good for beginners; Cat Cat has an entry ticket (about 150,000 VND for adults.
- Lao Chai – Ta Van: the most popular route through Muong Hoa Valley, half a day to a full day; you can stay overnight in a Ta Van homestay.
- Ta Phin: a Red Dao village known for herbal baths; about 30 minutes by car from town, then walk.
- Longer 2–3 day routes (e.g. via Ban Ho, Thanh Phu): need good fitness, with homestay nights.
Guides: short routes like Cat Cat are fine on your own. For longer trails across rice terraces, in the rainy season, or for climbing Fansipan, a local guide is strongly recommended (and required for Fansipan); it's safer and supports local communities.
Note: in the rainy season (June – August) trails are slippery and landslides can occur; wear grippy shoes and carry a rain jacket. Respect locals: ask before taking photos and don't enter homes uninvited. You can book a tour from Hanoi to Sapa. Check out the itineraries and prices on MeTravel—have a wonderful trip!
