Be careful when buying street food

· Updated 2026-10

Vietnam’s street food scene is diverse and affordable. You will frequently encounter vendors selling fruit or snacks on the street; however, language barriers and the necessity of using cash can sometimes lead to avoidable inconveniences. Keep the following points in mind:
1. Street food purchases for one person typically cost between 50,000 VND ($2) and 100,000 VND ($4). If the price quoted is significantly higher, be cautious or consider trying a different stall. It is also best to avoid using 500,000 VND banknotes for such purchases.
2. If you are particularly interested in a certain street food item, you can try to negotiate the price or—if they speak English—ask passersby for their input.
