What is a dorm room, and is it worth it to save money?

For every trip · Updated 2026-09 · From MeTravel's own trips

A dorm is a shared bedroom with several bunk beds, usually in a hostel or homestay. You rent a bed rather than the whole room, so it costs far less than a hotel.

  • Types: mixed dorms for men and women, male-only dorms, female-only dorms (usually more private and secure), and private dorms rented whole by a group.
  • Pros: low cost, ideal for solo travellers, and an easy way to meet people from many countries.
  • Cons: little privacy, and noise, lights or other people's schedules can disturb you. Toilets, bathrooms and kitchens are usually shared.
