How do you get around Milan by public transport?

Milan · Updated 2026-09 · Official information

Milan's metro, trams and buses are extensive and reliable, linking the centre with Linate and Malpensa airports. Trains are far cheaper than taxis.

  • Download the ATM Milano app for maps, live times and tickets. For longer stays, a Multi-Day Pass is usually cheaper than single tickets.
  • The metro and trams stop around midnight and restart at 5:30. At night, take buses marked "N".
  • Avoid rush hours (8:00–9:30 and 17:00–19:00) if you can. Trams are slower but scenic. The centre is walkable; wear shoes suited to cobblestones.
  • Direct trains from Milan reach Como and Varenna in about an hour, handy for Lake Como ferries.

Note: Always validate your ticket at the yellow machines before entering the metro or right after boarding a tram or bus, or you risk a heavy fine. Watch for pickpockets at Milano Centrale, Cadorna and around the Duomo.
