What should you know before visiting Versailles?

Paris · Updated 2026-09 · Official information

Book early on the official website and set aside a full day. Versailles is huge; half a day isn't enough.

  • Beyond the main palace, visit the gardens, the Trianon palaces and Marie Antoinette's Hamlet (Hameau de la Reine).
  • Take the RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche, the easiest and cheapest way from Paris.
  • Arrive at opening time (9:00) or late in the afternoon. Weekdays, especially in spring and early autumn, are quieter than weekends.
  • Download the palace's free app for audio guides.
  • Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen or a hat (the gardens have little shade), plus water and snacks, as the restaurants inside are busy and expensive.

Note: Large bags must be left at the cloakroom. Pack light and allow time for security checks.
