Taking the train from Milan to Varenna is easiest. Pick one town as your base and explore the others by ferry.
- Where to stay: Varenna is peaceful and scenic, perfect for slow mornings. Bellagio is beautiful but crowded, so visit early or late in the day. Menaggio feels local and suits hikers. Como town is a handy starting point but not ideal as your main base.
- Don't miss: Villa Carlotta (gardens and art), Villa Monastero (lake views), a sunset walk along the water in Varenna, and Bellagio's quieter corners.
- Book ferry tickets ahead for the Varenna – Bellagio – Menaggio route.
- Best time: May, early June or September. Avoid the July–August peak if you can.
Note: Don't visit only Como town or over-pack a single day. Book restaurants ahead and wear comfortable shoes.
