Get up early, walk a lot and eat on Roman time.
- Visit the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps at sunrise to beat the crowds. The best cornetti usually sell out before 11:00.
- Walk instead of taking taxis to discover the side streets. You may cover over 20,000 steps a day on cobblestones, so choose comfort over style in shoes.
- Carry a bottle and refill it for free at more than 2,500 public nasoni fountains. On the first Sunday of the month, most state museums and archaeological sites are free.
- Keep lunch light: espresso for about €2, supplì or a porchetta sandwich. Locals eat dinner around 20:00; at 18:00 restaurants are mostly full of tourists. Many places don't do takeaway.
Note: Public toilets are rare and often paid. Use the ones in cafés, museums or stations.
