Use contactless payment everywhere, book big attractions early, and always carry a light waterproof jacket.
- Getting around: bank cards or Apple Pay work on the Tube, buses, trains and trams, so there's no need for an Oyster card. From Heathrow, the Elizabeth Line is much cheaper than the Heathrow Express. On escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left.
- Saving money: many major museums are free, such as the British Museum, Tate Modern and National Gallery. For free views, try Sky Garden or Horizon 22 (booking needed) instead of The Shard or London Eye. Take the Uber Boat instead of a Thames cruise.
- Food: skip chains for Borough Market, Camden Market, Covent Garden or Soho. Tip 10–12% in restaurants, only if service isn't already included.
- Book early: Buckingham Palace, West End shows, Sky Garden and the Churchill War Rooms sell out fast.
- Don't over-plan; leave time to wander. The weather can bring sun, rain and wind within an hour.
