What should you know about using the London Underground?

Use contactless payment and remember to tap in and out to pay the right fare.

  • Tap your debit or credit card on the yellow reader at the start and end of every journey. It's the cheapest and easiest way.
  • London is split into Zones 1 to 9; most sights are in Zones 1–2. Keep track of the zones you cross to avoid higher fares.
  • Travel outside rush hour (weekdays 6:30–9:30 and 16:00–19:00) for fewer crowds and lower fares. The city is big, so allow extra travel time.
  • Check for line closures or engineering works, especially on holidays. When the Tube stops, take night buses marked with "N" before the route number (e.g. N15). Use Citymapper for routes.
  • Stand on the right on escalators. Mind the gap between train and platform, especially on older lines such as the Bakerloo.

Note: Watch out for pickpockets at busy stations and around tourist sights.
