On a first visit to Venice, choose San Polo: close to the main sights but far enough from the crowds to enjoy your stay.
- San Marco: right by the most famous sights, ideal if you want to sightsee before the crowds arrive.
- Castello: like San Polo, close to the main sights without the crowds, plus great shopping.
- Cannaregio: home to the most locals, best for a feel of everyday Venetian life.
- Dorsoduro: the arts district, with museums such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gallerie dell'Accademia.
- Santa Croce: has car parks, so it suits travellers driving into Venice. It's busy with commuters, but some hotels are a little cheaper than in the centre.
