Southern California is warm year-round and rarely drops below freezing, so any season works. The differences:
- Summer (June–August): beach season for surfing and sunbathing. Busiest, with the highest room prices. Coastal mornings are often overcast, clearing in the afternoon.
- Autumn (September–November): still sunny and warm, the ocean is still warm, and there are fewer visitors than in summer. This is Santa Ana wind and wildfire season, so check the weather news before and during your trip.
- Winter (December–February): mild, pleasant days, and surfers are still out. It's the main rainy season, so pack a light jacket and an umbrella.
- Spring (March–May): rain tapers off, hills turn green, and prices are lower than in summer. Coastal mornings are often grey.
