Walking and public transport are the best ways to get around New York.
- Walking: New York is one of the most walkable cities in the US. In Manhattan most streets are numbered, so it's easy to find your way.
- Subway and buses: they cover the whole city and the subway runs all night. Since 4 January 2026, a ride costs $3. Tap a contactless bank card or phone (the OMNY system) at the turnstile; with the same card you pay no more than $36 in any 7 days, and further rides are free.
- Taxis and rideshare (Uber, Lyft…): expensive, especially late at night. Yellow cabs are usually a little cheaper than rideshare but harder to find.
- Cycling: there are bike lanes across the city and many Citi Bike public bike-share docks.
- Shared e-scooters: only available in parts of the Bronx and Queens, not in Manhattan.
- Don't rent a car: traffic all day, high tolls and the Manhattan congestion charge, and almost no street parking.
