New York travel tips and what to pack

New York · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Good to know

  • Plan and book early: the earlier you book, the cheaper rooms and tickets are. Broadway shows are the exception, where last-minute tickets can be good value.
  • Use public transport instead of taxis: taxis are very expensive, while the subway and buses go everywhere cheaply.
  • Go during happy hour if you're heading to bars: drinks are pricey in New York, and happy hour saves a lot.
  • Visit Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx too: the outer boroughs have plenty to see and are easy to reach by subway.
  • Tipping: in the US, table service is usually tipped about 18–20% of the bill.

What to pack

  • A power bank: using your phone for directions all day drains the battery fast.
  • A small daypack: easier than a handbag on busy streets, with room for anything you buy.
  • Really comfortable walking shoes: every New York itinerary involves lots of walking.
  • Packing cubes: keep your luggage compact and organised.
