Which Christmas markets in Italy are worth visiting?

Italy · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Italy's best Christmas markets are in the northern mountains, with Austrian–German influence.

  • Bolzano: Italy's biggest market, in the city centre below the Dolomites.
  • Merano, Bressanone and Trento: smaller, cosy markets, easy by train from Bolzano.
  • Milan: markets around the Duomo and Navigli, a giant tree in the Galleria.
  • Rome: a market on Piazza Navona (smaller than it used to be).
  • Naples: Via San Gregorio Armeno sells handmade nativity figures all year.

Note: 8 December (Immaculate Conception) is a public holiday in Italy, and markets get very crowded.
