What should I wear in Europe in winter?

Europe · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

From December to February, Germany, Austria, Czechia and Hungary hover around 0°C, with some sub-zero days; Paris and London are damp and windy at about 3–8°C.

  • Dress in layers: thermal base, sweater or fleece, padded jacket or long wool coat.
  • Keep hands, head and neck warm: touchscreen gloves, beanie, scarf.
  • Waterproof, non-slip shoes and wool socks.
  • Indoors, trains and museums are warm, so choose a coat that's easy to take off.
  • Short days: it gets dark around 4–4:30 pm, so do outdoor sightseeing in the morning.

Note: standing at an evening market feels much colder than walking; bring heat packs.
