For a 3–5 day break, pick a place with direct flights under 4 hours from Vietnam to save time.
- Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai): visa-free for Vietnamese, the coolest, nicest weather of the year, moderate prices.
- Singapore: visa-free, Marina Bay fireworks, great for families.
- South Korea (Seoul): winter, chance of snow and skiing; visa required.
- Taiwan and Hong Kong: cool weather and great food; visa or entry permit required.
- Japan: many shops close 1–3 January, but the New Year shrine visits (Hatsumode) are unique.
