Where and when can I see the Northern Lights?

Europe · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Northern Lights season runs roughly from September to March; you need dark, clear skies, far from city lights.

  • Norway: Tromsø – the most popular base, with many aurora-chasing tours.
  • Finland: Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village) and Lapland – stay in a glass igloo.
  • Sweden: Abisko – known for clear skies.
  • Iceland: aurora plus waterfalls and hot springs.
  • Stay at least 3–4 nights to improve your chances, as auroras depend on weather and solar activity.

Note: Norway and Iceland are in the Schengen area; prices in the Nordics are very high and temperatures can drop below -20°C.
