How do I apply for a Schengen visa (France, Germany, Italy...)?

Europe · Updated 2026-10 · Official information

This answer is written for Vietnamese passport holders.

One Schengen visa covers 29 European countries, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Where to apply: the country where you'll spend the most nights; if nights are equal, your first country of entry. Apply through the embassy's authorised visa centre in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Main documents: application form, photo, passport valid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen; itinerary, flight and hotel bookings; travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000; employment letter and leave approval; 3–6 months of bank statements and savings.
  • Visa fee (as of Oct 2026): EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6–12; visa centre service fees are extra.
  • Processing: usually 15 calendar days, up to 45 days.
  • Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel; 1–2 months ahead is ideal, earlier for summer and Christmas.

Note: since 2026, your photo and fingerprints are taken at the Schengen border (EES). Rules can change; check the website of the embassy you apply to.
