What should you eat in Austria?

Austria · Updated 2026-08 · From MeTravel's own trips

Austrian food carries a strong imprint of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Dishes worth trying:

  • Wiener Schnitzel: thin veal pounded flat, breaded and fried crisp, served with potatoes or salad. Austria's signature dish; try it at least once in Vienna.
  • Goulash: beef and vegetables stewed in a deep red sauce. Hungarian in origin and perfect on a cold day.
  • Tafelspitz: boiled beef with clear broth and vegetables, a family-lunch favourite.
  • Frittatensuppe: beef broth topped with thin strips of pancake.
  • Sacher Torte: chocolate cake with apricot jam and a glossy chocolate glaze. The original is at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna.
  • Apfelstrudel: thin, crisp pastry filled with apple, raisins and cinnamon. Best served warm with vanilla ice cream.
