What makes Budapest's Christmas markets special?

Europe · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Budapest hosts two main markets, typically open from mid-November through the end of December, with prices generally lower than those in Germany or Austria.

  • Vorosmarty Square: The oldest market, featuring a wide array of handicrafts.
  • St. Stephen’s Basilica: Offers light projections on the basilica’s facade and a small ice-skating rink.
  • Must-try : kurtoskalacs(chimney cake), langos(deep-fried flatbread), and goulash soup.
  • Recommended activity: A soak in the Szechenyi thermal baths amidst the cold weather.

Note: Hungary uses the forint; while many stalls accept cards, it is advisable to carry some cash. The markets close early at 2:00 PM on December 24th and open later—at 12:00 PM—on December 25th and 26th.
MeTravel will provide updates on its fanpage regarding when the market will open.
