What should I know before visiting a European Christmas market?

Europe · Updated 2026-10 · From MeTravel's own trips

Christmas markets are crowded and cold, with a few customs of their own; knowing them saves money and keeps you safe.

  • Mulled wine (Glühwein) mugs carry a deposit (Pfand): return the mug for your money back, or keep it as a souvenir.
  • Carry some cash in euros: many small stalls don't take cards.
  • Go on weekdays or early afternoons; Friday and Saturday nights are packed.
  • Watch for pickpockets: wear your bag in front, never keep your phone in a back pocket.
  • Non-alcoholic option: ask for "Kinderpunsch" in Germany and Austria.
  • On 24–26 December most markets, shops and many museums close, and trains run less often.

Note: Hotels get expensive and book up fast at Christmas; Book rooms and apply for your Schengen visa early.
