Beginners don't need to buy gear: renting at the resort is enough; what matters most is taking lessons for the first few hours.
- Rent on site: skis or snowboard, boots, poles and helmet; many places also rent ski wear.
- Bring: thermal base layers, thick wool socks, waterproof gloves, goggles, a neck gaiter and sunscreen.
- Lessons: at least half a day of group or private lessons; don't head onto steep runs on day one.
- Lift passes: beginners can often buy a cheaper beginner-area pass instead of a full-day ticket.
- Travel insurance: choose a plan that covers skiing, as many standard plans exclude ski accidents.
Note: snow reflects sunlight strongly, so sunburn and eye strain happen even in the cold; take breaks and drink water often.
